Growing in soft, clumps of bright-green to yellow blades that stand 1-1/2’ tall, Autumn Moor Grass (Sesleria autumnalis) is a popular ground cover grass.
In the summer, airy stalks of white-gold inflorescences rise above the leaves, followed by brown seed heads in the fall. This grass is happy in a variety of conditions, as it thrives along the coast in salt conditions as well as in the Midwest, where it is cold hardy to less than 0° F.
Plant Sesleria autumnalis in full sun or light shade and well-drained soil, and cut back in early spring, before the growing season. Drought tolerant near the coast, Autumn Moor Grass should be given regular moisture during establishment and throughout the dry season. Beautiful in masses, meadow plantings, traditional and contemporary gardens.
